Medium Voltage / Low Voltage electrical substations are an important part of the electrical system as they include the terminations of transmission or distribution lines, equipment, electrical panels, in some cases even transformers, and all the devices necessary for control and protection.

Depending on their function, Medium Voltage / Low Voltage electrical substations can be defined as transformation, conversion, transmission, or distribution substations.

Medium Voltage / Low Voltage electrical substations can be divided into public and private substations:

Public substations are owned by the electricity distribution company and supply private users with single-phase or three-phase alternating current (230 V and 400 V).
In order to install all the equipment belonging to the distribution company, the private individual must provide the energy distribution company with a dedicated room accessible to the company's personnel. Usually, this is a prefabricated type of substation.
